Update
Dog Habitat Rescue in Brooklyn, is fostering the mama pit and her four newborns. All are said to be doing well despite their ordeal. Mama is extremely malnourished, but still able to feed, nursing her foursome regularly.
A big thanks goes out to Dog Habitat for stepping in!

The story proclaims that the 14 pitbulls who were rescued from a fire in the Bronx yesterday were taken to the ASPCA, however the video shows New York City’s Animal Care & Control taking the pups away.
Even the news reporter refers to the dogs going to a local shelter? Why is it that ACC can never get any love? They are a city-funded and grossly underfunded shelter. Their budget pales in comparison with the ASPCA’s.
As for the pitbulls, that fire might have been the best thing that ever happened to them. Whether they get adopted or put down, it beats a life of breeding and fighting, which is most likely why they were holed up in the apartment in the first place.
Great post. Like you say, ACC doesn’t get nearly enough attention or credit. Hopefully one day they will.
Jason… thanks for your comment. Unfortunately, until we have a mayor in office who is passionate about homeless animals, or at least cares about the plight of homeless animals, ACC will always play second fiddle to the other rescue orgs. ~Ree
We’re hearing that the owner wants them back. They must be spayed/neutered! He probably won’t want them if they’re fixed. They’re evidently in terrible shape – he should be charged with animal cruelty, not given his dogs back.
Thanks for this info. Do you happen to know if ACC has them or if in fact the ASPCA does? ~Ree
I hate when these poor animals get “rescued” only to be given back to the owner. We have a guy in our county right now who is back in court for his 3rd offense. He gets a slap on the wrist every time and then does the same thing again. Even if the court rules he can’t get his animals back, he finds more. It’s so frustrating! I hope those pit bull pups get adopted and get real families who love them!
I agree, it would be such a crime to give them back to the owner. The other tough spot about this is that this happens all the time in every city across America. The ones that make the news invariably get rescued, the ones that don’t have a sensational story attached to it get killed. It’s all just so unfair and really unfortunate. ~Ree
I cannot locate your twitter link. where can I get it?
Hi there, it’s @Reedu. Thanks ahead of time for the follow! ~Ree
Hey!
Excellent post. My organization, Dog Habitat Rescue, is fostering the mom and four newborns. We had a call from a staff person at the Manhattan AC&C shelter the night of the fire asking if we could care for them and they arrived the following morning. All are doing well despite their ordeal. Mama is extremely malnourished, but still able to feed. She’s nursing her foursome regularly and hops in to the whelping box without coaxing. The pups are strong and getting chubbier every day. We hope to keep the family long enough to find them homes where they will continue to thrive!
Hi Jay! Thanks for coming by and leaving this comment. My rescue, called Reefuge Animal Rescue, is an ACC New Hope partner but I haven’t been able to do much rescue since I had a baby. I am so happy to hear first hand that the Bronx mama pittie and her babies are safe. Thanks for taking them. I *may* be able to help foster a puppy when they are weaned and ready. Feel free to hit me up. ~Ree

The way the ACC staff treat the dogs is criminal, as is the lack of interest most of them show in adopting out these dogs. Incompetent behavioral evaluations, grossly unsanitary conditions, an almost total lack of compassion, and the criminal conspiracy that exists amongst Mayor’s Alliance members/rescues and the associated organizations don’t even begin to cover the problems at ACC.
